WHAT IS PSYCHOTHERAPY?
Psychotherapy is a process that begins with establishing a relationship between you and a licensed mental health professional. Styles, techniques, and theoretical orientations may vary, however communicating your thoughts, moods & behaviors is central in addressing your concerns and goals. Psychotherapy is not advice; I believe that people are capable of solving their own problems in a way that is aligned with how their values, culture, and expectations intersect.
WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?
Mindfulness is a guide in thinking that I deeply believe in and practice. I will thoughtfully incorporate foundations of it where and when it fits. It’s a practice of attention, intention, and non-judgement towards ourselves that increases our awareness of mind-body experiences. In therapy, I find this valuable when evaluating thoughts, symptoms, and sources of depression and anxiety- both physical and emotional. I believe that our bodies often speak to us and we’re not always listening- and practicing mindfulness tunes us into our needs, teaches us to respond vs. react, and softens the sometimes judging relationship we have with ourselves.
HOW DO I KNOW IF IT’S TIME FOR ME TO SEE A THERAPIST?
Struggle is struggle no matter what it looks like or who is experiencing it. Maybe dealing with stress, grief, or loss has exceeded your ability to cope, or you’ve noticed a decline of satisfaction in your relationships. Perhaps your behaviors aren’t matching your values or you’ve noticed that don’t seem like yourself. Internal struggles often come up during natural life transitions and to move forward you might have to unpack and organize trauma or past experiences in a way that can serve your growth. If you want to know and understand yourself in a new way to make impactful changes, therapy can help.
HOW DO I KNOW IF YOU’RE THE RIGHT THERAPIST FOR ME?
Therapists are people, and people are different. As with any investment, do a little research, ask questions, and remember that it’s okay to shop around. During the initial consultation, assess your comfort level, decide if my approach to therapy has the potential to help you, and continue to reflect on your expectations and needs throughout therapy.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT THE FIRST SESSION?
I’ll provide an intake questionnaire to fill out and to use as a guide to learn about your personal history, current symptoms, immediate needs, and goals. Questions are encouraged and I’ll remind you that the space is yours.
HOW LONG DOES THERAPY LAST?
There is no one-size-fits-all model for everyone. New issues and old sources are often uncovered in the process, and when you’re satisfied with the progress you’ve made, ending therapy is always an open discussion and my overall goal. If issues arise that I’m not specialized in treating, I will help identify a provider and assist in the referral process.
